BANG!

Another July 4th has come and gone.  We love the fourth around here for all the fun it brings.  First up was the Ward Pancake Breakfast.  Someday I'm going to remember to bring my camera for that one.  I got up early this year to join the tennis portion.   I'm loving tennis and playing it with friends twice a week but I still have lots to learn.

In the evening, we had a few families over for dinner and fireworks.  We choose to have Mexican food which was really yummy.  We didn't think much of it but when I mentioned it to another friend she asked, "Is that allowed?!"  I guess we should have gone with American food for America's birthday...

Here's some firework pictures and a video for your enjoyment.

The next day we took off for a mini vacation.  We drove to Eugene and spent the night in a hotel.  Yes, we went swimming.  In the morning we drove to Winston to go on the Safari tour.  We've done this before and love it.  It is much better to go in the morning when the animals are active and eating (well, not the monkeys).  So what it is, if you haven't done one before, you drive around in your own car as the animals roam free.  The more dangerous ones are behind fences of course.

Are camel's humps usually this funny looking and odd shaped?

Here is a cute video of a baby cheetah calling for its mom (AKA, Safari Staff Member).

We then took a detour driving home.  We drove to Crater Lake and then up through Oregon towards home.  Crater Lake was made when a volcano erupted some 7000 years ago.  When the land settled into a crater, it was filled with snow and rain with no run offs.  With precipitation and evaporation, the water levels stays pretty much the same all year.  It was sooooo blue, it looked unreal.  We were glad we made the BIG detour to see this natural landscape.

This dome in the center was a volcano that erupted after the lake was made.  There are two other domes like it some hundreds of feet under the water.  By the way, this is the deepest lake in the United States.  The deepest part is 1943ft.

That was such a fun night. Maybe next year we should do Italian? Maybe some Indian? :)

Vancouver is the best place in the country to celebrate the 4th!! (In NY you can't even buy sparklers!!) I miss WA the most on the 4th of July! What a fun celebration you had--I can't believe how much all those kids have grown since we left 3 years ago. Wow. I have heard the safari is a fun thing to do, but we've never done it. We did a similar one in Tel Aviv and it was CRAZY to just have these animals walk up to your car. Amazing. We HAVE seen Crater Lake, and I LOVED it!! I know exactly what you mean about the blue--it's just indescribable. Your pictures do a pretty good job, though. Glad you got to go--it's an amazing thing to see in person!

I am constantly jealous for outdoor forays. Ah, and fireworks. And tennis... one day I'll use those beautiful courts in my own neighborhood. I love your blog and your pictures. Thinking of you from the not-the-desert and not-the-woods of Texas.
