I didn't mention it last year...July 4th celebrations are crazy up here in Washington! Fireworks are legal and it is amazing what you can buy. Through-out all the neighborhoods people set off their own fireworks. They are allowed to do fireworks each night for a week!!! Anyway, this July 4th was as crazy as last. We started it off with my first ward activity that I was in charge of. Every year the ward has a pancake breakfast at a certain park. You can not reserve the eating area. Each year we just stake our claim when the men go down to play tennis at 6:00AM. To our surprise this year, someone had already called their spot with tables already set up for a brunch at 11:00. So we scramble to change to another park that was not taken. Of course things couldn't go smoothly for my first activity! Actually, this turned out to be a better park. We kept with tradition and had a bike parade, ultimate Frisbee and kickball along with having a terrific playground to keep the little ones busy. Everything turned out great and I'm thankful to get my first activity over with.
We were invited over to a friends house for a 4th of July dinner. Let me first say how nice it is to spend time out doors without sweating to death. It was great! The kids had fun playing on the trampoline and playing with friends. The food and company couldn't have been better. After dinner, we headed out front for the street's ice cream social and fireworks show. You obviously can't go wrong with ice cream, and the fireworks were great. One of the neighbors had a torch continuously going so the kids could light there sparkle sticks at will. I was really nervous about this as Lauren has no fear! We had some fun "on the ground" fireworks as well as the big loud ones in the sky. The only problem with doing fireworks yourself, is your neck gets really tired looking straight up in the air for an hour or so. With fireworks going off in all neighborhoods and streets, it sounds like we were in the middle of a war with blasts going off all around. It is pretty crazy. Like last year, Carley was not thrilled. She did not like the noise and how close everything was. She started with her fingers in her ears and ended up with her jacket over her head and her body curled up in a ball. The rest of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

That is too funny about Carly. Emily is exactly the same way with loud noises! Fireworks aren't legal in my neighborhood but that doesn't stop anyone. We heard them all night long! (At least it wasn't all week!)
Oh, and congratulations on your first activity! It sounds like it was a ton of fun!
Sounds fun. Fireworks aren't necessarily legal in Texas, but you can buy them outside the city limits and everyone does them anyway (and on New Year's), so it is much crazier here than in Arizona. Glad your activity went well--that is always stressful.
I love th pictures of Carly. She will think that's pretty funny when she gets older. Mason is scared to death of really loud noises as well. We stayed a little farther back this year when we watched the fireworks. I also loved not sweating to death for the 4th of july!! I really love your blog layout--It looks so adorable!!
You got some great pictures. Utah's crazy too. The boys love fireworks and I'm thinking because it has to do with FIRE. Uggg...boys and fire. YEAH...I'm glad you activity went smoothly. Those can go either way. Looks like a great day.
Hey Karen!
In VA we can do our own on the ground fireworks and sparklers too. Greg wanted to get the big box at Sams Club that was as tall as he was! We ended up doing our fireworks at a friends house and we had a much smaller box of fireworks. :) I couldn't justify spending $100 on fireworks! But it was so much fun to do our own!

that does sound crazy with your own fireworks show...brian and my boys would be in heaven...althugh they are so crazy around a normal campfire i think there would be some safety issues with them setting off their own, maybe its a blessing we live someplace too hot to even enjoy fireworks....your activity sounds so fun, and the ice cream social sounds perfect!
Love the pictures. I love coming up north to Idaho for fireworks...same thing..anyone can get anything (especially with Wyoming so close) Nothing is illegal practically.
Wow! Which park did you end up at? I have had a fear about that every year! The first they did this activity they just had it at Bev's. The year we did it, we had it at the Prune Hill Pavillion, which was nice too. No playground, but still fun.
I was thinking about Ultimate just this morning. I love playing Ultimate Frisbee. Forget volleyball and basketball, we need a stake Ultimate tournament.
It sounds like your first activity was fun, if not perfect. Nothing is ever perfect!
